This Is For Frustrated Dreamers

I was driving in to work this morning and I started thinking about all the days I dreaded going to work. I was so sick of it… the job, my boss, the people I worked with, the traffic… I would wake up angry every morning. I didn’t want to deal with the crap of the job, but I was forced to go. I had been homeless, I was broke, living paycheck to hopefully the next paycheck. I couldn’t take a day off for fear I would get fired. I was just frustrated. I thought I hated my life and the job.

It was so aggravating because God had placed all these dreams and hopes in my soul and mind and I had no idea how they were going to come to pass. To have a dream of being something better and living better than the way I was at that moment and to not see a way of getting there felt like death to me. I thought, “Dear God, why would you give me so much hope and not make a way?” But what I learned through prayer was, with no path in front of you and no road map… this is where true faith begins. With faith I realized that I wasn’t frustrated with my life or the job, I was frustrated because I was a person who had dreams for myself, a person who had visions for my life and I wasn’t living it. Have you ever been there, where you felt so strongly that there was more to this life than what you see in front of you?

One of the most difficult things about being a dreamer is the fear that the dream will never happen. I’m here as a living witness to tell you your dreams can come true. You can’t give up. And I am here to let you know that everything can work together for your good. The time that you are spending on that job that you think is a dead end is not. You’re being prepared just like I was. I was a shoeshine boy, I worked as a bill collector, a used car salesman, in housekeeping in a hotel, and they all were preparation for where I am now.

What do these things have to do with where I am now? I’m glad you asked. I am able to use skills that I learned. I shined shoes, so I know how to shine my shoes if I need them to look nice. Selling used cars was a great way to learn how to close a deal. Bill collecting taught me great negotiation skills. Working at that 5-star hotel taught me a lot about travel. Every experience in your life is here to teach you something.

Today, while you’re at work, don’t be frustrated. Look around you and ask God what are you there to learn and how will it be a part of your future dream. Honor that job, do the best you can at it, because God will bless you for honoring something that belongs to another.

I hope this inspires you today. If you need a little more inspiration then watch my first sit-down interview in years with Oprah on Oprah's Next Chapter. It airs this Sunday on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network at 9/8c. I talk a little about not giving up. I know it will move you.

Here’s a prayer for today: “God help me hold on, help me to get to what I dream of, help me to honor where I am today so that I can appreciate where I will be tomorrow. In Jesus' name.”

Mr. Perry I would like to thank you for your encouraging words! I keep the faith for I know that to believe is the important ingredient to achieving. I have been through so much in my life and yet I am still here BLESSED! I want to become! I want to help! I want to make a difference when and where-ever I can. At this point in my life I am a third shift Laundry Attendant, and I operate my own hand car wash. I aspire to entertain because in doing so, I can prove to myself that yes I CAN, and I keep the faith that the Most High will eventually open the doors, and I Charles David Ford will reach GREATNESS, although I never loose sight that GREATNESS is in what I DO! So I will continue working hard and doing what is necessary to place myself where I know one day I will be! With the BLESSING of the MOST HIGH! Thank you for your time and for listening! Dear Tyler: First of all i would like to thank you so much for been a good model for lots of us out here. 1st time I saw you on Oprah which Oprah is my life. I truly cried which a happy cry. I told every one i know. There is always hope in life. Because you are a TRUE God example. As a child i had a dream like any child. I always dream to be ACTOR. I did some acting when i was in high school. But where i came from (Ethiopia) it is mostly have a degree was parent focus not like follow my hurt. I guess when i see you it makes me feel like you are leaving my dream life. I came to the states 16 years ago with my lovely husband from Ethiopia. It wasn't a choice to follow my dream. The only choice was try to survie. I start working and try to go college. I graduate from college and now i am happy what i have because when you complain you get more to complain. Eventhough it is not my dream job but i tell you. What i do put smile on my family face and put some bread and milk on the table for my precious boys. I have to boys one 10 and the other 7. The 10 years old know how to act but i always ask him why not been actor and he always say mama been an anctor is mom dream not his. He wants to be NFL player. So i always tell him to follow his heart. Because God will put a dream on our heart and we should follow our heart. So there is another dream in my life never came pass (happen) for me. I have two people i love and adore just like they are my family member. Oprah and Tyler Perty. My kids pray every night for me to meet you guys but never came. I even ask God can i at list be the first person to comment on their facebook. Guess what never happend. I know deeply from my heart Everything is possible in GOD. One day this two dream will come true and my life will be complete. To be honest Tyler i am not furstrated at all but kind of puzzled i guess. If i can get connected with GOD why is that really hard to meet you and Oprah. Just why? I know between me and God there is no wall. But between me and you guys has a big wall and one day that wall will break through for me with almight God. Thank you for giving me hope.

As I was reading the article by Tyler Perry it brought back many memories. I am 60 years old and was born two months early in 1953. I was told that I had cerebral Palsy but I learned at a early that was not going to stop me. I knew my God put me me here for a reason and He was going to help me discover the right path. It was not an easy journey but I am now retired with 27 years with DOD and three years has a social worker in a nursing home. When people ask how did I acomplish these goals I say I always have God at my side and I know that there is someone who 's struggles were harder than mine and offer them up in pray.

Thank you Tyler for this confirmation! This reminded me that I am on track with the visions that God has given me. Below is an excerpt from my book. The title of the book is "Saved by Grace - The Memoir of an Immigrant" This book is my testimony of God's grace on my life since I migrated to the USA 9 years ago. Some may wonder why a girl from the villages of Jamaica would want to write a book? But when you have been through what I have been through and God brought you out by His grace, you have no choice but to tell of His gloriousness! This chapter is titled "All You Have Been Through Will Not Be Wasted" "Know that all you have been through both good and bad helps to shape who you are. It’s so easy for us as humans to disregard the trying times, yet embrace the victorious times. But believe me when I say you are who you are because of all times. Looking back I can now see that being asked to clean the hotel floor back in Branson, Missouri was a test of my pride. The test of pride is to prove if you can do what you've got to do where the lord has placed you to learn what you need to learn, so you can move from one level to the next. And if you don’t past the test you’ll never complete the class so you’ll have to keep taking it over and over again, because you didn’t learn what you should have learned the first time." Tyler every single word that you said here is true! Because I have lived it and I am still living it! I have the visions and the dreams that God has given me all written down according to the book of habakkuk. But, but, but.....

Hi Tyler, thanks a lot for sharing this with us. I feel very encouraged. I know how frustrating it can be to wake up in the morning feeling very demoralized just because you have a dream which is not coming through.I believe that whatever the circumstance and the dreams we have, God will always hold our hands and see us through them. Thank you

I read this and found words one can live by. Honor God and God will honour you, seek ye the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added unto you, all the good dreams.

  • Vanessa F. Aurora, CO

This message was not only inspiring but confirmation. From the class I'm taking at my church, the message Dr. Cindy Trimm preached this past Sunday to tonight's service...truly encouraged is how I'm feeling right now. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I am a frustrated father. I'm frustrated not because of my dreams but for my sons dream. You try to teach your kids that they can do anything they want to if they work hard. My son is a gifted actor and although he is only 16 years old I know that if given a chance he could be the actor that he always dreamed of being. I see less talented young adults on film and tv and think WOW--really--why not My son Kyle. I hadn't gave up because I know that's what he really wants to do. He attended Stagedoor Manor where he performed very well. In fact, many parents, and attendees can't believe he hasn't been given a chance. I know this is his dream and not mine. Acting is all he wants to do. His mother and I tell him he needs to write his own plays. He's smart and intelligent and although his opportunity hadn't happened yet, he is prepared. Like your good friend once said, "luck is perpetration plus opportunity ." We'll, Oprah said something to that affect. Anyway thanks for your story. I know he want give up. Maybe one day you will get a chance to see him and hire him in one of your plays, movies or tv shows. Until then keep representing because we know we are not really represented in Hollywood.
