Kim Kardashian in the Marriage Counselor

I think many of you know that this is a very difficult time of year for me, so what I try to do is make sure that I’m working during this time. All I wanted to do was shoot a great film and try to keep my mind off the holiday grief that I have been experiencing for the past two years. I could not have imagined I’d be getting all these emails about Kim Kardashian. I HAVE SEEN THEM!! YOU HAVE BEEN HEARD!! …LOL. Now, may I say something? Can a brother get a word in?….LOL. Y’all gave me a new movie title, Tyler Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman Cause You Hired Kim Kardashian, Don’t Make Me Take Off My Earrings and Boycott Yo A**.”…LOL.  Some of my ladies are upset. Ok, all jokes aside, can I have my say? Will you at least hear me out?

I was in a Mexican restaurant and the cutest little old woman stopped me and said, “I want to talk to you about KAR-DAT- CHA-NEM.” I said, “Ma’am?” She said, “What is wrong with you putting her in the lead role of your movie?” By the time I explained to her that she was not in the lead role and why I thought she should be in “The Marriage Counselor”, she said, “Oh, I see your point and I can’t wait to see the movie.” So, if you don’t mind, I’d like to share with you what I said to her then maybe you’ll see why I wanted her in the film.

This movie is about a young lady named Judith (Jurnee Smolett), who grew up in the countryside of Virginia in a trailer park. She was raised in the church by her mother Sarah (Ella Joyce). Judith married her childhood sweetheart Brice (Lance Gross) and had the perfect life until she graduated college and went to work in the big city.  After college, all she wanted to do was be a marriage counselor, but the only job she could find was working for a matchmaker named Janice (Vanessa Williams). Janice has several employees that work for her, including a woman named Ava (Kim Kardashian). Ava is constantly trying to influence Judith on everything from her shoes to her hair. Judith meets a man at work named Harley (Robbie Jones). Harley challenges everything in her life from her marriage to her husband to her faith. Meanwhile, Brice (Lance Gross), Judith’s husband works at a pharmacy owned by Mrs. Waco (Renee Taylor). Brice has just hired a coworker named Melinda (Brandy), who has some major demons that she is running from. In the end, the choices that both of these young women have made come crashing down on them and their lives will never be the same.  I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to ruin it for you.

After I finished writing this movie, I sat back and re-read it. Half way through my read, the gravity of what I had written hit me. I knew that this message was not only for my age group, but for all audiences, especially the youth.  ESPECIALLY THE YOUTH!!  YOUNG FOLKS NEED TO SEE THIS!!!   And not just the young people that follow me, but the young people that are following other young people, as well.  I wanted a younger cast, that’s why I put Jurnee in the lead and invited Lance Gross, Robbie Jones and Brandy.  About two months ago, long before I even heard about Kim’s marriage or divorce, I was trying to finish up the casting. I said to one of my producers, “who else is out there that young people are looking up to?” One of my producers showed me pictures that his daughter had taken of several hundred kids lined up around the corner to get into a Kardashian store. They wanted to meet Kim. I thought, what better person! She literally has millions of young people following her. I thought and still do think, that it would be very responsible of her to be a part of this film. To have the young people that look up to her, see her in a film that is about, what happens in life when you make the wrong choices. Whether you’re aware of it or not, to be honest with you I wasn’t, millions of young people adore her and are following her every move. If one of those young people see this film and find the strength to live a better life and not go through what these characters went through in this movie, then we have all done what I feel I’m being led to do here. I hope you understand. I really do!

And lastly, because I believe that my films speak from the inside out, why wouldn’t Kim Kardashian be invited into a film about Faith, Forgiveness and the healing power of God?  What is wrong with that??

You would have been better off just admitting that its all about the money and Hollywood glam rather than that trumped-up explanation you gave. You made yourself look really stupid with that 'kids look up to her' bit. I mean, do you have any idea why kids look up to her? It has nothing to do with her Christian qualities, I can tell you that much. So why would you support that? You could be considered as a 'sell out' with this movie and it has nothing to do with her skin color.

I find it amazing that people feel as though Tyler Perry has to carry the weight of BLACKS in Films. Get a grip people, Kim. K. Is human just like the next person. He chose who he wanted t be in film and that is final. When are we as people going to stop complaining because we disagree with things that we cannot change. Let our voices be heard where they matter: cyberbullying, teen pregnancy, at the polls.Everyone has their own struggles that they have to live with daily. Deal with yours and let Mr. Perry deal with his. Remember the Word says, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone". I se a lot of people throwing stones toward TP and Kim K. Think about those things that you have done and go back to God and try again.

Just curious? Do you think that if I "leak" a sex tape, start a franchise on E!, or under you on TBS, that I can be in one of your movies? You're right, she does have millions of people following her, but at the end of the day, what did she really do? Her family may be close, but they are extremely disrespectful and the media and fans are eating it up!!!! Kim is cute, actually she's pretty regular without the extensions in her hair and all the makeup, but so am I and MILLIONS of other young women. I love love LOVE that you cast Jurnee Smolett as the lead in this film. She's been acting forever, and I have NEVER heard anything negative about her. Ok so back to the point...I'm educated, I'm a veteran, I give to those who are not as fortunate...but I don't have a sex tape. Is that why I can't get a break? Your rationale for casting this girl in this film isn't going over well with many of your fans. It seems as if you are like all the others. I honestly thought you were different...

I am well over the age of fifty. My main comment is why Kim?? You appear to be a little miffed that people would question such a choice. Kids admire her for all of the wrong reasons and you just confirmed their stupidity.

It's just that... there are actresses out there who are unknown who would be so grateful for a chance at such a great role as an introduction into the world of acting. Perhaps a more sympathetic character, in a time of economic crisis. Casting one known for their "excesses" could alienate those who are truly trying and barely making ends meet. We want to be able to relate. If it's about attracting a younger base, we thought you already had a young base? And certainly an "older" base is nothing to sneeze at either. I hear you about forgiveness and certainly so, at the end of the day we do need to forgive. But I don't think it's about that, I think as a fan, I have looked to you to give me real-ness and heart... a life lesson. I guess in a way this is a life lesson. I wonder is it, money changes people and things. Or it has the ability to do so. I hope this is not the case here. In Jesus name I do wish for blessings and good things for all involved in the film.

That would be all well and good if that's really the real reason behind the film, God is a God of order and everything he does is done in decency and order, if what ever you do is not done in that order then you're cutting off your own blessing, I don't want to walk in a judgemental spirit so I won't say what I really feel about whether you are using the word God for sympathy or do you really have the Love of God in your heart? so I'll just let you deal with that! you can fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the time, those of us that walk's prophecticly with the true love of God in our heart have a strong discernment about the realness of a person and on that note, Mr Perry I will continue to lift you up in prayer just don't let the Lust of Money over take you continue to ask for Divine Guidance so that God can order your step you need to pray that Daily!!!!

I must say I enjoy Mr. Perry's films and I applaud him for all he has done and accomplished. But I must say I am disappointed with his choice of Kim Kardashian. She made her claim to fame with a sex tape and passing herself around Hollywood like a box of c****** jacks. I thought Mr. Perry wanted to be his own man and not Hollywood's man. Do things his way and not the ways of others. But in his own words he choice Kim, because so many other people think she is it. (young girls look up to her...in other words she's in this season) Why not choice new faces. Personally, I'm tired of seeing the same faces over and over again. You could make it work. Your Tyler Perry. If you can make a man in drag work you can make new fresh faces work. I know money talks, but come on. What's a man to gain the whole world and lose is soul? For nothing more than poor choices of greed and fame. Why not choose a Braxton sister instead???? (Trina??????)

Mr. Perry, I rarely visit your messgae board because generally I have a positive image of you so there is no need. I have a great respect for you and how you have come so far in life. I have to say, I do feel compelled to post a comment regarding your having Kim K. in your next film "The Marriage Counselor" (saw the play and LOVED IT!). While I don't know Ms. K or her family - I am strongly against what they represent. Ms. K. and her family shot to stardom by what? A sex tape that Kim made with Ray J..... their celebrity status prior to that was mild due to their father being on the OJ Simpson trial but with that people weren't as impressed by them (Kardashians). They capitalized on Kim's sex tape and built this empire - based on something that should be private between a man and woman. You say you have Kim in the film because millions of young people look up to her - I WOULD NOT want her as a role model for any of the children in my family and that is why none of them watch anything Kardashian.... Have u seen their shows (I saw one episode and could not take it) they have no respect for their mother in the way they talk to her and the same can be said for their step father. So why are you promoting her? My belief is you have Kim in your movie to capitalize on her sex tape fame as well... because that is where her celebrity status stems from.... For her charachter you could have tapped any number of young fashion savy starlets - Gabrielle Union, Jennifer Hudson, Solange Knowles, Kelly Rowland, Monica, Kelly Osbourne, Mena Suvari... I can go on and on and on..... You are a business man and I know this was a business decision but I am disappointed in your choice and have to say you've lost a group of supporters in my family.

Tyler - Whoa...just because there are kids following Kim K. doesn't mean she's a role model or someone kids should be following. To me, that you specifically because she has kids following her and you didn't think beyond that as to whether she was a positive role model is telling. She is definitely not someone I want my young daughter to look up to. On top of it, you picked someone who is not even an 'actress'. Of all the wonderful black, white, asian, hispanic...actressess you pick her??? I've been a fan of yours generally but to me this was an error in judgement on your part. You absolutely have a right to hire her and I absolutely have the right not to support this particular movie - sad because normally I see all of your movies.

Hey everybody there's no need to attack Kim K, I mean hey she made mistakes and has to deal with it everyday in the public eye that's already embarrassing enough. Try living out your dirty secrets on camera. Do I think she should be acting?....NO! I think there are tons of undiscovered African-American actress that Mr. Perry could've chosen, 10 times better than her to be in the role, and yes his explaination is not really all that great. But I work in the industry and understand all too well how target marketing helps sale tickets and he's smart millons of fans follow Kim K, why not put her in the role? Is it going to be a quality performance maybe not but no need to attack the woman, call her a hoochie, gold digger and all that. Have beef with what socitey wants to see on screen. Hollywood is only gonna give consumers what they buy!

I just read Morris O'Kelly's(Eurweb.com) response to your letter to Fans regarding Kim K. I came to your site to read your letter. I'm confused becuase you say you are trying to attract a younger audience. You already have a young audience. Granted Kim will boast your box office numbers but she does not match up with your brand. Kim became famous for a sex tape and from there she went on to make millions heisting her rear end up to the camera and for that she role model for our youth. I don't watch her show so I can't speak to whether its about Faith, God, forgiveness or how to show your best side on a sex tape. I will go see the movie to support Jurnee, Brandy, Vanessa, Ella and others.
