Kim Kardashian in the Marriage Counselor

I think many of you know that this is a very difficult time of year for me, so what I try to do is make sure that I’m working during this time. All I wanted to do was shoot a great film and try to keep my mind off the holiday grief that I have been experiencing for the past two years. I could not have imagined I’d be getting all these emails about Kim Kardashian. I HAVE SEEN THEM!! YOU HAVE BEEN HEARD!! …LOL. Now, may I say something? Can a brother get a word in?….LOL. Y’all gave me a new movie title, Tyler Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman Cause You Hired Kim Kardashian, Don’t Make Me Take Off My Earrings and Boycott Yo A**.”…LOL.  Some of my ladies are upset. Ok, all jokes aside, can I have my say? Will you at least hear me out?

I was in a Mexican restaurant and the cutest little old woman stopped me and said, “I want to talk to you about KAR-DAT- CHA-NEM.” I said, “Ma’am?” She said, “What is wrong with you putting her in the lead role of your movie?” By the time I explained to her that she was not in the lead role and why I thought she should be in “The Marriage Counselor”, she said, “Oh, I see your point and I can’t wait to see the movie.” So, if you don’t mind, I’d like to share with you what I said to her then maybe you’ll see why I wanted her in the film.

This movie is about a young lady named Judith (Jurnee Smolett), who grew up in the countryside of Virginia in a trailer park. She was raised in the church by her mother Sarah (Ella Joyce). Judith married her childhood sweetheart Brice (Lance Gross) and had the perfect life until she graduated college and went to work in the big city.  After college, all she wanted to do was be a marriage counselor, but the only job she could find was working for a matchmaker named Janice (Vanessa Williams). Janice has several employees that work for her, including a woman named Ava (Kim Kardashian). Ava is constantly trying to influence Judith on everything from her shoes to her hair. Judith meets a man at work named Harley (Robbie Jones). Harley challenges everything in her life from her marriage to her husband to her faith. Meanwhile, Brice (Lance Gross), Judith’s husband works at a pharmacy owned by Mrs. Waco (Renee Taylor). Brice has just hired a coworker named Melinda (Brandy), who has some major demons that she is running from. In the end, the choices that both of these young women have made come crashing down on them and their lives will never be the same.  I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to ruin it for you.

After I finished writing this movie, I sat back and re-read it. Half way through my read, the gravity of what I had written hit me. I knew that this message was not only for my age group, but for all audiences, especially the youth.  ESPECIALLY THE YOUTH!!  YOUNG FOLKS NEED TO SEE THIS!!!   And not just the young people that follow me, but the young people that are following other young people, as well.  I wanted a younger cast, that’s why I put Jurnee in the lead and invited Lance Gross, Robbie Jones and Brandy.  About two months ago, long before I even heard about Kim’s marriage or divorce, I was trying to finish up the casting. I said to one of my producers, “who else is out there that young people are looking up to?” One of my producers showed me pictures that his daughter had taken of several hundred kids lined up around the corner to get into a Kardashian store. They wanted to meet Kim. I thought, what better person! She literally has millions of young people following her. I thought and still do think, that it would be very responsible of her to be a part of this film. To have the young people that look up to her, see her in a film that is about, what happens in life when you make the wrong choices. Whether you’re aware of it or not, to be honest with you I wasn’t, millions of young people adore her and are following her every move. If one of those young people see this film and find the strength to live a better life and not go through what these characters went through in this movie, then we have all done what I feel I’m being led to do here. I hope you understand. I really do!

And lastly, because I believe that my films speak from the inside out, why wouldn’t Kim Kardashian be invited into a film about Faith, Forgiveness and the healing power of God?  What is wrong with that??

I think of it like this Reading the disapprovals of Kim showed that people were upset solely based on Kim’s negative image as an industry whore. Well ….The Black Female Community is hypocritical if we think we can praise Nikki Minaj and then turn around belittle Kim Kardashian the way you guys did on this forums. If Tyler Perry put Nikki Minaj in this role ( a woman whos rap music, videos, and total physiological attributes demeans black women) No one would complain. Yet Kim who is not a saint but at least doesn’t degrade blacks, gets attacked. An Ignorant audience is impossible to please. Just sayin. Tyler I Iook forward to treating my entire family to another brilliant film filled with life lessons that I will teach my children. Thank You

For me, Nikki Minaj is no better than Kim Kardashian. They are both cut from the same cloth. It's just disappointing to see the only black movie mogul d** into the same overused well when casting for his movies. How many times have we seen the same actors play different roles in Perry's movies. Are we to believe that these are the only black actors in Hollywood? How about promoting the lesser-known, but up-and-coming, equally-talented minority actors for a change? I like your movies Perry, but try harder. I realize you don't really have to, coz you have more money that anyone can shake a s**** at, but how about trying something different. Different actors, different type of movie, different director, different writers.....

Kim is that you? That is precisely what I mean. Tyler did not put Nikki Minaj in his film. I disagree. Many would have complained. But Tyler validates Kardashian, but would not even think of Minaj for his cast.

I always support Tyler Perry's movies, because they are funny and message driven. However, I am not sure I will support this movie, because her (Kim) sorry excuse for self is in it. Someone will really have to talk me into it.

I would respect Tyler Perry more if he just came out and said,"Hey, Kim Kardashian is famous. She has 17 million twitter followers. That's half the advertising for the movie I need. It's a good business decision to cast her in the film. In fact, the more controversy this issue raises, the stronger I get in my conviction that I made the right decision casting her." We all know Kim is no role model. Mr. Perry, you're better than this. Quit taking your core audience for fools. But then again, you probably can. They will complain a lot, but in the end, they will watch the h*** out of said movie. Kudos.

Ummm you need to re-read this part "I knew that this message was not only for my age group, but for all audiences, especially the youth. ESPECIALLY THE YOUTH!! YOUNG FOLKS NEED TO SEE THIS!!! And not just the young people that follow me, but the young people that are following other young people, as well. " It clearly states he was reaching out to not only his followers but those feeble-minded kids following Kim K. Its not a business tactic .... its a Change the world and people like you tactic !

I appreciate the fact that you realize Tyler Perry's movies reach the so-called 'feeble-minded" youth. However, you must also realize, these young people maybe feeble-minded, but they aren't stupid. You can't expect them to learn life-lessons about doing things the right way from a lady who got fame and fortune from a home-made pornographic movie. This fact isn't lost on our young people. The entire world knows how Kim Kardashian became successful. There simply isn't any way to divorce this glaring fact from her character in the movie. Which brings me back to my original point; Mr. Perry cannot, with a straight face, refer to Ms. Kardashian as a role model. What role does Ms. Kardashian possess that we want our kids to model? Perry is insulting yours and other black folks' intelligence by insisting that ANY Kardashian is a role model for black youth. This is why I'd much rather he take the "business" route. I would respect him more if he did that--absolutely nothing wrong with that! He simply needs to quit taking this self-righteous route.

Hello Tyler, I have read through some (actually many) of the comments here and it seems nobody including ''''CHRISTIANS'''' would be interested in BAILING KIM K OUT OF THAT LIFE-STYLE!!! Most if not all the fans are worried that she might end up pulling more followers to her 'world' as a result of appearing in a Tyler Perry movie. This is nothing but fear!!!! Now, lemme re-echo this fact, Kim Kardashian whom many Madea fans and critics don’t like is a famous struggling young woman that happens to(for some reason) have so many people(most of them young) looking up to her. This is a fact and it is not gonna change. What Tyler Perry is trying to do is sow a seed in KK's life believing that some day this young lady and even her fans will come to the knowledge of 'THE TRUTH THAT SETS PEOPLE FREE'. Tyler is trying to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ but INDIRECTLY!!! For those us that have surrendered our lives to and believe in Jesus Christ, you will agree with me when I say that ''Kim Kardashian would be a totally different person if she believed in and knew Jesus Christ!!!! What I want us to do here is to reduce the complaints to ZERO and find ways of helping Kim to become a more responsible person(because according to many Tyler Perry fans, KK is one of the most irresponsible celebrities!!!!). Jesus Christ is saying, ‘’…….LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."(Matthew 19:19). Where are those Jesus Christ CHRISTIANS that are ready to pray for KIM KARDASHIAN to turn to CHRIST??? Where are the fans that will search for her cell phone number, call her and share the gospel of JESUS CHRIST with her??? Where is that caring Christian that is ready to invite Kim Kardashian to a local CHURCH??? Where is that TV/radio/music/movie producer that is ready to use their GOD-GIVEN talent to try to woo Kim Kardashian to the ‘good side’??? For I strongly believe that if Kim Kardashian came to Jesus Christ today, even a huge fraction of her fans, friends, freaks and followers would be tempted to try a similar move. The word of God says ‘’….people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.’’(Daniel 11:32). The time for all men, women and children to be SAVED is now. And the time to invite people like Kim Kardashian to your church is NOW!!!

I am totally perplexed over some of the comments about Kim. She is playing a respectable role in this movie. So let's not cloud the positive message with the past of one of the messengers. This verse came to my mind, "You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel" (Matthew 23:24).

    • Desi United States #1776851

Respectable role?! How is that? She is playing as a women who only dates rich and powerful men, focused solely on her image (not to mention how she views how others are dressing and their images) and dresses way to revealing. Is that really respectable?!

    • Kimberly New York #1783913

Respectable in that she is only Kim Kardashian. This role suits her. She can play the whore, but she wont be getting a lead role in Tylers Perry films

Look at it this way Tyler. Nobody is going to buy Michael Jordan as a skiing champ. Of course your movie, like most films, is about what not to do. Beautiful message but it will only ring true if Kim can act. The shock effect you're receiving is because Kim is not a Liz Taylor, Barbra Stanwyck or Rita Hayworth. As for me if she really nails this part and convinces me that she really is this interesting character that you've created then, all things will change. And good luck with that. But, if this character is this social giant type who keeps screwing up and thinks she's passing on the perfectly correct advice and setting a fine example for the young then my pick would have been Halle Berry.

I love you Tyler Perry and am so grateful for the entertainment you provide us with and the profound messages your movies and plays put out there for us. I feel you are a brilliant, compassionate soul and it is your right to run your business the way you see fit. I wonder had you been a white producer putting Kim K in your movie or had she been a black actress, would so many have given you so much flack about having her in the movie...just a little thought. At any rate, if the majoritiy of your followers and supporters are as open minded and compassionate as you are, it shouldn't matter who was cast but how well the cast projects the message you are trying to convey with this movie. I cannot wait to see it! Furthermore, I don't feel you have to explain yourself. For those hating on Kim and/or the fact you cast her in your movie...maybe they need to do a little more soul searching. Please, Mr. Perry, keep doing what you are doing.

I think that in the movie business people's perspectives count, but I have never understood why people feel they have a say in the way you run your company. I'm not a Kardashian fan, but the bottom line is that you didn't get to where you are now but listening to other peoples opinion. You got there by the Holy Spirit and trusting your got. Still not sure about Kim, but I'm open and I'll be there supporting as always.

    • robert jennings . #1776612

well , i guess its time for two cents........ i think that this was a poor a choice ........ you are sending mixed signals...... yes it your right to cast who want........ and when you do it be man about.... Kim, and what you represents is not fair representation of the youth population and does our young people a great disservice ........ most of them are good kids with hopes and goals. you have a talent that was given you to , a gift that should be used wisely................ you are sending mixed signals and your vision seems cloudy........... if you a Man Of God like you say are........ " be in world , but not of world............................................................. we need examples that are clear on their purpose and their goals........................................... stilling praying with you, but i will be supporting any more of production venues

    • Desi United States #1776853

I agree with your comment about Kim being a disservice to the youth. Her image is very negative and there is no way I would let my baby girl look up her.

  • Erica Broadous

I have always loved you Tyler Perry and supported ALL of your films, but now since you have cast Kim Kardashian, my feelings have changed and here is why: 1. You say you wanted someone who the youth look up to.....well in all reality is she someone that the youth (especially young girls) should be looking up to?? She created a sex tape to get fame and had a fake wedding to get money. So when you cast her in your movie, it's kinda saying to young girls "you don't have to work hard, get educated, get proper training, have discipline. or work on your craft to be successful. All you need to do is use sex and/or your body and you will be a star". We should be sending a message to young girls that the way to the top is to use your mind, not whats below your waist/between your legs. And if someone has bad behavior they get rewarded??? I personally don't feel that supporting someone with that type of behavior sends the right message to our children. 2. When you were casting, you were looking for who the youth look up the most?? So that tells me that you werent looking for a person who actually had a skill/talent for acting. You just wanted whoever was the "hottest at the moment". You obviously are thinking about who will bring in the most money, not who will do the best job. How can I support a movie when the director has that type of mindset?? I can't and I won't. I think you have officially "sold out". And I don't mean that in a racial way, but rather you have sold out to Hollywood. It appears you care more about money, than you do about making a great film. Good luck on your film, but you have officially lost a fan.
