Kim Kardashian in the Marriage Counselor

I think many of you know that this is a very difficult time of year for me, so what I try to do is make sure that I’m working during this time. All I wanted to do was shoot a great film and try to keep my mind off the holiday grief that I have been experiencing for the past two years. I could not have imagined I’d be getting all these emails about Kim Kardashian. I HAVE SEEN THEM!! YOU HAVE BEEN HEARD!! …LOL. Now, may I say something? Can a brother get a word in?….LOL. Y’all gave me a new movie title, Tyler Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman Cause You Hired Kim Kardashian, Don’t Make Me Take Off My Earrings and Boycott Yo A**.”…LOL.  Some of my ladies are upset. Ok, all jokes aside, can I have my say? Will you at least hear me out?

I was in a Mexican restaurant and the cutest little old woman stopped me and said, “I want to talk to you about KAR-DAT- CHA-NEM.” I said, “Ma’am?” She said, “What is wrong with you putting her in the lead role of your movie?” By the time I explained to her that she was not in the lead role and why I thought she should be in “The Marriage Counselor”, she said, “Oh, I see your point and I can’t wait to see the movie.” So, if you don’t mind, I’d like to share with you what I said to her then maybe you’ll see why I wanted her in the film.

This movie is about a young lady named Judith (Jurnee Smolett), who grew up in the countryside of Virginia in a trailer park. She was raised in the church by her mother Sarah (Ella Joyce). Judith married her childhood sweetheart Brice (Lance Gross) and had the perfect life until she graduated college and went to work in the big city.  After college, all she wanted to do was be a marriage counselor, but the only job she could find was working for a matchmaker named Janice (Vanessa Williams). Janice has several employees that work for her, including a woman named Ava (Kim Kardashian). Ava is constantly trying to influence Judith on everything from her shoes to her hair. Judith meets a man at work named Harley (Robbie Jones). Harley challenges everything in her life from her marriage to her husband to her faith. Meanwhile, Brice (Lance Gross), Judith’s husband works at a pharmacy owned by Mrs. Waco (Renee Taylor). Brice has just hired a coworker named Melinda (Brandy), who has some major demons that she is running from. In the end, the choices that both of these young women have made come crashing down on them and their lives will never be the same.  I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to ruin it for you.

After I finished writing this movie, I sat back and re-read it. Half way through my read, the gravity of what I had written hit me. I knew that this message was not only for my age group, but for all audiences, especially the youth.  ESPECIALLY THE YOUTH!!  YOUNG FOLKS NEED TO SEE THIS!!!   And not just the young people that follow me, but the young people that are following other young people, as well.  I wanted a younger cast, that’s why I put Jurnee in the lead and invited Lance Gross, Robbie Jones and Brandy.  About two months ago, long before I even heard about Kim’s marriage or divorce, I was trying to finish up the casting. I said to one of my producers, “who else is out there that young people are looking up to?” One of my producers showed me pictures that his daughter had taken of several hundred kids lined up around the corner to get into a Kardashian store. They wanted to meet Kim. I thought, what better person! She literally has millions of young people following her. I thought and still do think, that it would be very responsible of her to be a part of this film. To have the young people that look up to her, see her in a film that is about, what happens in life when you make the wrong choices. Whether you’re aware of it or not, to be honest with you I wasn’t, millions of young people adore her and are following her every move. If one of those young people see this film and find the strength to live a better life and not go through what these characters went through in this movie, then we have all done what I feel I’m being led to do here. I hope you understand. I really do!

And lastly, because I believe that my films speak from the inside out, why wouldn’t Kim Kardashian be invited into a film about Faith, Forgiveness and the healing power of God?  What is wrong with that??

Right on! I just found out she was cast in your move through reading this! It's a shame that legalism is still running rampant in Christianity today with the constant judging and criticizing. For all of you who don't know, Miss Kardashian was raised in Christianity. Maybe she isn't as open about it as she is with other things but I'm certain that God will use Tyler Perry to restore her relationship with the Lord if it needs to be restored or strengthened. I think that NOT ONE CHRISTIAN is in ANY RIGHT to judge another Christian, especially in a decision like this! You don't know what impact it may have on her or on anyone in the cast for that matter! What you SHOULD be doing is praying for her, as she also faces challenges like any other person and pray so that God take His rightful place in her life instead of judging her and her short-term marriage. Tyler Perry knows what he's doing, let the man work! You all know his movies and plays never disappoint, if I do say so myself! The story lines in his plays and films touch my heart because He looks to GOD for them, not to man! Keep it up and God bless you!

Write on Tyler...Teach on Tyler... GOD gave you the gift & you continue doing as you are directed...If you did what every person wanted you to do & the way they wanted you to do it...Guess what--you wouldn't be where you are now.

The Bible says Let He Who Has No Sin Cast The First Stone! Mr. Perry I support your decision as a young woman and as a Christian. For all of those who would judge Kim K. for the mistakes she made, take a look at yourself in the mirror. Remember what you were doing before Jesus found and saved you? Remember all the people you hurt, the lies you told and the destruction you brought along with you? We, as Christians, have a duty ordained by God that we should go out and help to save the lost because we were once lost ourselves. Mr. Perry is doing just that. Who's to say that if Kim is casted in the movie that God won't touch her heart and she might accept Christ. You should be praying that she is delivered. Stop judging her and Mr. Perry's decision to cast her. You are not GOD!

Tyler, I personally feel like your faith has brought you this far and I know that HE hasn't brought you this far to leave you. I see all these negative people saying they won't support you if you put Kim K. in your movies then I wonder why when I wanted to see your movie Good Deeds on Friday it was sold out and I had to purchase my ticket online for Saturday to ensure I got to see it. I know you don't let this negativity effect your work because, please believe you still have more people supporting you then those who don't and the ones who don't, simply don't matter. On amother note, you should bring more of your plays to South Carolina because I would love to see Madea Gets a Job but it isn't playing anywhere near me. That would be appreciated so I can support you even more. Keep doing you!!

You only put her in your movie to get more bodies at your movies. You would of had more this weekend at Good Deeds, but we still mad about Kim Kardashin.

I never understood why everyone was so upset about you casting Kim K., before I read why you cast her I thought well he has a reason for casting her in a film and you gave the reason why. Because I never thought twice about why you cast her, maybe I shouldn't be here making a comment but, I thought you should know.

I loooove all of your movies and plays. They are truly a blessing! I will admit that when I 1st heard that you were putting Kim.K in this movie, I was like "Oh Lord Keep Tyler near the Cross" LOL. I am NOT a fan of Kim.K and being a 21 year old College student with little sisters between the ages of 10-11, I really was pondering if I should take them to see this movie. That's when my eyes opened up. I am soooo Happy that you put Kim in the movie for 3 reasons 1. Kim.K's will grow in after this experience. A film like this will cause Kim to look at herself, humble herself and to think twice about her life, love life, faith and her integrity. If the cast pray from when the day begin and then again when the day end, it will help build them up. In order for a person to get into character and to have a feel for a movie/play is to do research, take notes, and began living your life in the way of your character. By Kim doing this she will become a better person. 2. She is a role model. Now to be honest she is not a very good one... However her doing this movie will be to shed light on the young ladies who look up to her and parents will be able to point out her flaws and her goods and have their kids compare the two. That's how I teach my lil sisters. I show them good things and when they like the bad things I show them and tell them what not to copy and do. 3. She is not the lead. So she can't call the shoots, run the show, etc. She has to humble herself. Also her character sounds a bit like her. A girl who likes to shop, young, probably ditsy, but lends a helping hand to a friend. Kim has those things, despite what the media puts out there. There is Good in all, we just need to learn to pull out all good and less bad. So people please give this movie a chance. I know I am. I plan on showing this for one of my 1st winter events in the Fall of 2012 as an RA. (Hopefully it will be out on DVD by then) God bless you Tyler Perry! Praying for you!

wow! ur incredible man i must say! i dont think that there is anyone else in our society today that more fully demonstrates the limitless grace of God than u buddy. here's a perfect example of choice made by someone who understands that we've all made mistakes and that Jesus is much more concerned with loving us and revealing to us our potential in Him that He refuses to remember the things that we done and said that we regret. u r a remarkable man and God bless u for holding to ur convictions rather than caving into the popular "church" opinions particularly on this subject. just bc its the comments of the "church" unfortunately doesn't mean that is the opinion of God. The opinions of God on this subject are clearly reflected thru the life of Christ when He tells the woman caught in the act of adultery, "neither do I condemn you", and who runs after the prodigal son with open arms and doesn't bring up the mistakes His son made or the money He wasted but is overcome w the raw compassion for the one that is lost but now is found! weve all been in that place and who are we to deny that amazing grace to someone else, such as a kim k. God bless tyler keep being urself bc its inspiring! much love brother!

Just curious, is Kim K's role supposed to be similar to the role of Becky from your Marriage Counselor stage play? If so I totally understand the casting choice :)

Well Mr. Perry, I was reading some more about you this morning as my Mom was just shocked to hear that you weren't married:) It brought a smile to my face to see that we share the same birthday. You got about 4 years on me, hehe. I read your letter about casting Kim K and several of the comments in response. Most of them were positive and supporting which really amazed me. THOSE people are the true Christians. There is nothing more frustrating than to see all of these comments about how terrible Kim K is, how wrong you are for casting her, calling her a w****, so on and son yet these people are claiming to be so holy and Christian. PLEASE people, I am far from the perfect Christian but I am faithful enough to know that comments and hatefulness like that is not how a Christian would comment or behave. Another comment that made me literally LOL was the comment about you being a "sellout" and trying to appeal to "whites and hispanics". Are you kidding me? I am the whitest, ghostly white, white girl and have loved and appreciated your work from JUMP!!!! The girl who introduced me to your plays and movies is Mexican. Niether of us care who is cast, black, white, brown, "light white" (as my biracial daughter calls me, haha), yellow, or green. These actors are just that......people who are being used to deliver a message. I'm no Kim K. fanatic but I have to say that I am sure that every single actress that you have previously cast have not led a 100% perfect life and I don't see people jumping up and down trying to boycott them...........hmmmmmmm. Keep it moving Mr. Perry, you are amazing. Ignore the haters and TRUST you will have no problem with ticket sales for any of your movies so let them stay home and miss a good message:)

Tyler, Cast who you want to cast in YOUR movies. I don't go to see your movies based on WHO you cast in it. I go to see your movies because of the MESSAGE you ALWAYS deliver in your movies. I am in no way a fan of Kim K. and have had to catch myself being judgmental as most of these other people commenting are. A quick reminder..JUDGE NOT LEST YE BE JUDGED. As long as you are making movies that have a message that God gave you to give, you have my support and many, many others. I'm pretty sure that Jesus was judged, ridiculed, abused, and tortured. Because there were many that felt intimidated by Him. Stories were fabricated about Him. And He still endured all that He did for us. I am in no way comparing Jesus to Kim K. I AM, however, comparing all those that did Jesus wrong to those trying to deter you Mr. Perry from doing what you believe you need to do all because of ONE PERSON. Absolutely ridiculous and shame on all those being negative as they are. God Bless You Tyler and we look forward to seeing your movies, plays, and whatever else God uses you to do!!

I'm really sad that you even had to justify your reason for hiring Kim Kardashian. A woman who has also starred in your movies, Tasha Smith, was a former drug addict yet everyone loves and praises her. Why? Because she's a great actress who is trying to do better for herself. Sometimes people forget that they don't personally know these celebrities. Half of what we read in magazines are fabricated or exaggerated stories. Kim is a business woman, is her name a brand? Yes. Does she do a lot of appearances, modeling jobs, and what ever else SHE chooses for money? Yes, but that is her choice. Maybe parents should stop looking to celebrities to be role models for their children. Half of the people that speak so poorly of her have probably done the same or even worse in their personal life than she has. NO one is perfect and if she is trying to make improvements in her life and try new experiences who are we to try to stop her. If you really appreciate Tyler's message, you will embrace this project and support ALL of the actors and actresses in the movie. Just stop being so negative, no person , that has no direct effect on your personal life should cause you to write angry letters and start boycotts. And for the person that will probably read this and feel extreme anger that will cause them to write a page long response to this.. No I am not a die hard Kardashian fan and I AM aware of her faults, I just choose not to focus on them. Now everyone relax!! Spread love, peace, and acceptance, NOT hate. :)
