Kim Kardashian in the Marriage Counselor

I think many of you know that this is a very difficult time of year for me, so what I try to do is make sure that I’m working during this time. All I wanted to do was shoot a great film and try to keep my mind off the holiday grief that I have been experiencing for the past two years. I could not have imagined I’d be getting all these emails about Kim Kardashian. I HAVE SEEN THEM!! YOU HAVE BEEN HEARD!! …LOL. Now, may I say something? Can a brother get a word in?….LOL. Y’all gave me a new movie title, Tyler Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman Cause You Hired Kim Kardashian, Don’t Make Me Take Off My Earrings and Boycott Yo A**.”…LOL.  Some of my ladies are upset. Ok, all jokes aside, can I have my say? Will you at least hear me out?

I was in a Mexican restaurant and the cutest little old woman stopped me and said, “I want to talk to you about KAR-DAT- CHA-NEM.” I said, “Ma’am?” She said, “What is wrong with you putting her in the lead role of your movie?” By the time I explained to her that she was not in the lead role and why I thought she should be in “The Marriage Counselor”, she said, “Oh, I see your point and I can’t wait to see the movie.” So, if you don’t mind, I’d like to share with you what I said to her then maybe you’ll see why I wanted her in the film.

This movie is about a young lady named Judith (Jurnee Smolett), who grew up in the countryside of Virginia in a trailer park. She was raised in the church by her mother Sarah (Ella Joyce). Judith married her childhood sweetheart Brice (Lance Gross) and had the perfect life until she graduated college and went to work in the big city.  After college, all she wanted to do was be a marriage counselor, but the only job she could find was working for a matchmaker named Janice (Vanessa Williams). Janice has several employees that work for her, including a woman named Ava (Kim Kardashian). Ava is constantly trying to influence Judith on everything from her shoes to her hair. Judith meets a man at work named Harley (Robbie Jones). Harley challenges everything in her life from her marriage to her husband to her faith. Meanwhile, Brice (Lance Gross), Judith’s husband works at a pharmacy owned by Mrs. Waco (Renee Taylor). Brice has just hired a coworker named Melinda (Brandy), who has some major demons that she is running from. In the end, the choices that both of these young women have made come crashing down on them and their lives will never be the same.  I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to ruin it for you.

After I finished writing this movie, I sat back and re-read it. Half way through my read, the gravity of what I had written hit me. I knew that this message was not only for my age group, but for all audiences, especially the youth.  ESPECIALLY THE YOUTH!!  YOUNG FOLKS NEED TO SEE THIS!!!   And not just the young people that follow me, but the young people that are following other young people, as well.  I wanted a younger cast, that’s why I put Jurnee in the lead and invited Lance Gross, Robbie Jones and Brandy.  About two months ago, long before I even heard about Kim’s marriage or divorce, I was trying to finish up the casting. I said to one of my producers, “who else is out there that young people are looking up to?” One of my producers showed me pictures that his daughter had taken of several hundred kids lined up around the corner to get into a Kardashian store. They wanted to meet Kim. I thought, what better person! She literally has millions of young people following her. I thought and still do think, that it would be very responsible of her to be a part of this film. To have the young people that look up to her, see her in a film that is about, what happens in life when you make the wrong choices. Whether you’re aware of it or not, to be honest with you I wasn’t, millions of young people adore her and are following her every move. If one of those young people see this film and find the strength to live a better life and not go through what these characters went through in this movie, then we have all done what I feel I’m being led to do here. I hope you understand. I really do!

And lastly, because I believe that my films speak from the inside out, why wouldn’t Kim Kardashian be invited into a film about Faith, Forgiveness and the healing power of God?  What is wrong with that??

She's an over exploited woman for no real reason. Gained fame from a sex tape. She has no observed talent. But leave it to a brother to cash in on her trashy brand while no white filmmaker is. And yeah leave the talented black actresses outta work and say its for the kids. Please you are not even casting talented people on your new shows black or other. So much for your integrity. Kim k is not a good move period! !

Tyler, It sounds like a good movie and I agree with you. Maybe Kim will learn something herself and feel the love of God through your ministry.

Tyler, I think is great that you are using Kim because young people have the wrong idea about what life is all about and if you can use someone that have this kind of affect on young people then go far it. Now maybe you should have used Justin Beaver also, people we need to do what it take to get young people back in control and so what if we have to use a few characters that they look up to. Tyler you keep doing what ever it take and I am very proud of you work this is why I have every movie and play that you have every written and my family have ha Tyler Perry night every Sunday and by the way NONE of my Tyler Perry stock is bootlegg. God Bless you man and keep on keeping on. We love you here in Tyler, Texas

Tyler: Isee why you might want Kardashian in your movie where was she when Black Folks was going to see your play?? Kardashian seems to think life is a gaame and she is the star. She wated money on a foolish wedding whe are are so many people without food, jobs and even place to live. She and her sisters need to grow up. They only want Black Men with money. I do't like her I think she's aW---e. she and her sisters. Please don't put her in any of your movies you are doing just fine whitout her. Look at all the blessing you have with out her.

Darlene, I'm not certain that you are fully versed with Mr. Perry and his work. You are either a fan, or you're not, simply stated. This man has made great stride in our culture and placed alot of people, from every race, in a position to make a lot of money. So what Kim K is spoiled or whatever your views are of her. She is still a player in HIS game, so embrace the talent, embrace his outline and at the end of the day, he doesn't owe an explaination to anyone how he casts his multi-million dollar movies. Mr.Perry, keep us laughing, keep placing our culture in good places, and don't listen to people lookin for something to be wrong with what you do. Ignorance is NOT bliss...It is practiced and LEARNED!! Lovin you Mr.Perry

Speak for yourself. It doesn't take a person with a high IQ to understand why this man casted such a trashy so called entertainer in his movie. It's about dollars and cents! He didn't need her and she certaintly doesn't need him but in the game after you make it, it is all about greed. There are great TALENTED actresses out of work like even Lindsay Lohan. Why put someone with such a trashy brand, history and no respect for a dollar that is by no means a role model into your movie with such a backlash from your fans? Has she done anything charitable? She can't even "not act" on her own show with her and her whiny voiced sister. Tyler is the only black producer out there and rose to the top with respect and integrity. There were no non actors in his movies. Now there are plenty including his new show "For Better or Worse" ie the hideous actor that plays the kid at work that bugs Marcus. So painful to watch him. A 17 year old kid playing a 12 year old. How about a new casting director? Please don't continue to cheapen all of your work Tyler. I have been to all of your plays but things are getting painful now especially with the casting of a s*** with no respect for money in your new film. That role could have been casted to basically anyone else. Not everyone wants to keep up with a Kardashian especially on the backs of your fans that got you where you are. Did you ask Oprah about this?

Ok this is really deep! I am a black women and I don't see anything wrong with him using her. Tyler has employed several of "us" over the years. He has also used people of other races who I am sure have some sort of history making mistakes that just was not publicized. Yes, Kim has issues don't we all. I am all about helping people grow to be better people and better contributors to society. So, if her being in this movie makes her a better more thoughtful person then I am all for it. Tyler I will watch the movie because I just like your style. Besides I know you sought God on this and since your moving forward in spite of I am sure you must have gotten confirmation. Continued success and blessings to you. You boy do the dang thang!!! BTW ... for all of the nay sayers on this movie have you thought about this ... by you not supporting Tyler you not only hurt him but you hurt all of "USes" (excuse my vernacular) he employs.

I feel that Kim has used black men to gain her success so why are you being used by this user. Mr. Perry you have the right to use anyone in your movie but we you audience have the right not to support your movie. It is sad that you are choosing one user rather than the audience that has supported you all these years. I will not pay to see marriage counselor or any of your future movies. Thank you for all your previous movies.

There is nothing wrong with you putting kim in this movie. Like you said you wanted something for the youth and you will get it with the cast you have so don't worry about what the press says you know what you write and you know how you want your message to be

To answer your question.........NOTHING! A RESOUNDING --NOTHING-. While I understand the backlash, I do not agree. There is nothing at all wrong with your casting Kim to be in your movie, rather it is as lead or otherwise. Nothing at all. I understand just a bit about who you are Tyler, and your actions up to this point speak very loudly. You do care and have consistently helped to forward the black cause. You have employed black actors and actresses nearly exclusively and it is commendable. It is perfectly fine that you would employ one of the worlds most attractive and more importantly -popular- females to aide in showcasing your movie. I like Kim. I don't know her personally, but from what I've seen so far, I like her. I relate to her much the same as I do other black women if not more. Our style-hair, makeup, fashion, home decor as well as personal demeanor and taste in men are very similar. I watch her and I can relate to her even if her skin color is a bit lighter than mine.
