From prolific, writer, director, producer Tyler Perry, The Haves and the Have Nots is a new television drama that follows the complicated dynamic between the rich and powerful Cryer family and the hired help who work in their opulent mansion set in Savannah, Georgia.

From the outside, the Cryers are the enviable face of success and wealth, but behind the veil the family’s dysfunction threatens to destroy their world of privilege. Cryer family patriarch Jim Cryer (John Schneider) is a powerful judge whose double-life, including tawdry affairs with high-priced escorts, puts his family and political ambitions at risk. His wife, Katheryn Cryer (Renée Lawless), is the ultimate matriarch portraying a loving and dutiful wife, but she is willing to do anything to protect her family’s status. Their son Wyatt (Aaron O’Connell) is a troubled angry jock who cares little for his own image and finds himself in and out of rehab. His sister Amanda (Jacyln Betham), a struggling law student, tries harder to live up to her parents’ expectations, but unknowingly has befriended a scurrilous young woman, Candace Young, with the power to ruin the entire family.

Hanna Young (Crystal Fox) is the Cryer’s maid and the matriarch of her family. Despite having no money, she has found other types of wealth through religion and virtue. She prides herself on her dutiful son Benny (Tyler Lepley), the glue who helps keep the family together. Hanna does have one dark secret, however, her estranged daughter Candace (Tika Sumpter)—a manipulative opportunist who will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

Other characters in the series include the Cryer’s chef Celine (Eva Tamargo), their wealthy friends Veronica (Angela Robinson) and David Harrington (Peter Parros), and son Wyatt’s rehabilitation counselor, Jeffery Harrington (Gavin Houston).

I absolutely love The Haves & Have Nots. Its the best soap opera in history. I get so mad when I have to wait a whole week to see it. I wish it would come on every day. My only problem is that its too slow. It takes them forever to talk & respond. That makes the show even shorter. Another thing is that I have no problem with g** people at all but Im tired of Jeffrey being confused. Either he's g** or he's not. I dont want to watch the whole show focusing on him & his sexuality. Let's move on already, that part is getting old & ignoring. Lets focus on Hanna & when she's gonna get a man. Or when Judge Cryer lies will come out about Wyatt. Besides that Tyler Perry you are awesome & I love u so much. Keep up the good work!!!

Maybe thats not a good thing but it hurts more to wake up in the morning not knowing what I missed. This is really not a comment. I just wanted to know if it's possible to purchase a DVD of "The Haves and the Have Nots", season 1. It has become a hit with my spouse and I did not watch it with her. I really want to catch up so I need to see it from the beginning. Let me know if I can purchase it.

While reading many of the posts, I have noticed that some of us have suggested Tyler take some writing tips from Shondra (Rhimes). I think I agree, but not in any disrespectful way towards Tyler. Tyler is used to writing comedic plays and so his characters are often "over the top". His "bad guys" are almost cartoonish is their "badness". He is not as seasoned as a dramatic writer as Shondra so he's not really adept at writing characters who have more than one dimension so his characters' behavior is mostly cliche. Shondra has been doing it for a long time and she knows how to develop a multi-leveled character. Let's take Olivia (Scandal characters) for example, she would chew Candace up and spit her out as a street-wise yet educated woman who knows how to get what she wants from men. She knows how to stay two steps ahead of whomever she is dealing with and outsmarts them before they even know what hit them. And Huck? Oh, he would have Quincy somewhere in a corner sucking his thumb. You want crazy? Quinn would have Amanda hiding under her bed. And Fitz could show Jim a thing or three about being corrupt and cheating. But none of this is to diss Tyler, he just needs to focus on each of his characters and give them real personalities and depth. I think too, that he maybe needs to play entire scenes out in his head before writing a scene. I say this because the scenes feel stifled and awkward as if the actors aren't sure of what they are supposed to do or say. And maybe it would help if he would hire a team of writers to help develop characters and scenes. I say all this like a sister would tell her brother. No disrespect...it's all love. I've supported Tyler's work since the first Madea play. I think like many of us, we were just happy to see a young black man doing something positive and we wanted to see him soar. He's soaring now and I'm on his team, I just wanted to give my opinion.

Can we please stop comparing Tyler to Shonda Rhimes?? She's a very talented woman and surely does her thing...NOW, can we let Tyler do his? The shows are completely different! I don't watch 'Scandal', it doesn't interest me; I watch shows strictly to be entertained and not to nick pick over every detail. If you want ridiculous, try the daytime soaps, w/their totally unrealistic, unresearched, recycled, tired storylines (good twin/bad twin; who's the daddy; back-from-the-dead, etc.); the viewers already know what's gonna happen before the writers do! THAHN's is something new and fresh from Tyler (some of us are tired of Madea), and I, for one, totally enjoy it! I think all the actors are doing just fine, and there are just enough twists we didn't see coming to keep you speculating from week to week! That's the FUN of it! I won't be whining and complaining until Jan. 2015, I can speculate about what I think might happen in the new season; until then, I'll just wait patiently 'til it gets here and move on w/life and other things!

I just started watching this show in July 2014. I love it. It's interesting, dramatic, and the story lines are realistic. These situations really do exist with some wealthy people (covering up criminal activity) and poor people (getting in trouble and being pitiful). Just watch the News. The acting is not great, but all of the actors are fun to watch. I had a "Have & Have Nots" marathon going on so that I could understand the plot. My only complaint is that the wait is s o o o long for season three (Jan. 2015). Why is there a 6-month hiatus? I don't watch soap operas as a rule , but this show has got me hooked. It's better than some of the corny stuff that's on major networks. Tyler Perry DON'T listen to the nay-sayers. Some of us TV viewers look forward to seeing something different.

I feel that Tyler Perry is making his audience wait too long, 2015 is just too long, I'm asking him to bring it back sooner. Start an online petition to bring it back sooner. I Love the show

Dear Brother Tyler, It feels as if you are making us wait a lifetime for the next episode. Your soap opera is the very first one I have ever watched, and I'm no youngster. This work of yours is very intriguing. However, it is more than an exercise in patience to wait until 2015. To prevent your schedule from taking its toll on me, I have begun to write my own continuation of the story. I will be finished well before next January. I can't stand waiting because your characters are too much alive in my head for me to leave them suspended for weeks and months. I am keeping them alive. They have not all died. Do you need help with any of the research or writing? Or do you think it is effective to make your audience wait? Yes, you are extremely creative, talented and hardworking, but there are others who can assist you to craft these episodes so they keep coming each and every week.

you know tyler i really wish you'd get it together.. the young and restless dont wait seasonal to return. just go on and give veronica a grandbaby with that one night stand that girl had with jeffrey and ride off that.. cmon now even i can write up some story lines here. we all know you are speaking about eye-candy for the women its for you too and when are you coming out of the close? anyone who cant tell you are g** have got to be either stupid and i wont say blind bcz blind people have better insight than tose who can see. i knew this before your best friend even admitted to it . these story lines of the g** men etc are all for you to get your point across cmon now stop insulting our intelligence and bring the soap back on before january. if it needs to go in someones place take that not-so funny show love thy neighbor off. everyne in there tries oo hard to be funny and they are not JUST SIMPLY NOT

  • Sindy South Africa

We'd like the Haves and the Havenots in South Africa please! & access to clips on the OWN website, it's so depressing to have seasons cut in half and not knowing what's happening next.
