From prolific, writer, director, producer Tyler Perry, The Haves and the Have Nots is a new television drama that follows the complicated dynamic between the rich and powerful Cryer family and the hired help who work in their opulent mansion set in Savannah, Georgia.

From the outside, the Cryers are the enviable face of success and wealth, but behind the veil the family’s dysfunction threatens to destroy their world of privilege. Cryer family patriarch Jim Cryer (John Schneider) is a powerful judge whose double-life, including tawdry affairs with high-priced escorts, puts his family and political ambitions at risk. His wife, Katheryn Cryer (Renée Lawless), is the ultimate matriarch portraying a loving and dutiful wife, but she is willing to do anything to protect her family’s status. Their son Wyatt (Aaron O’Connell) is a troubled angry jock who cares little for his own image and finds himself in and out of rehab. His sister Amanda (Jacyln Betham), a struggling law student, tries harder to live up to her parents’ expectations, but unknowingly has befriended a scurrilous young woman, Candace Young, with the power to ruin the entire family.

Hanna Young (Crystal Fox) is the Cryer’s maid and the matriarch of her family. Despite having no money, she has found other types of wealth through religion and virtue. She prides herself on her dutiful son Benny (Tyler Lepley), the glue who helps keep the family together. Hanna does have one dark secret, however, her estranged daughter Candace (Tika Sumpter)—a manipulative opportunist who will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

Other characters in the series include the Cryer’s chef Celine (Eva Tamargo), their wealthy friends Veronica (Angela Robinson) and David Harrington (Peter Parros), and son Wyatt’s rehabilitation counselor, Jeffery Harrington (Gavin Houston).

I have been reading some of the negative comments posted related to the choices made in the writing regarding interracial love interests, sexual preference and sexual conduct. Despite some viewers not liking particular dynamics of these subject matters portrayed, they do to some degree realistically reflect our society whether we like it or not. There are black g** guys out there who are attracted to white guys, straight or not (I'm waiting to get a better handle on what side of the fence Wyatt is on). There are punks out there who prey on weak people they can sniff out (women and wimpy men alike) yet fold under when confronted by strong, fearless men like Benny. Mr. Perry is trying to be nice in his writing by having a beautiful young black woman, as troubled as Candace is, also be ambitious, extremely intelligent, intuitive - and kind underneath her exterior. If Mr. Perry were to have her character talk with street vernacular and look like she just stepped from off of the corner, purple weave and all, then everybody would be at his throat over that. The irony in all of this is that for years ALL MY CHILDREN, THE GUIDING LIGHT, GENERAL HOSPITAL and THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS were filled with all kinds of nonsense yet scores of blacks kept up with "the stories" consistently and recorded them to make sure they didn't miss anything. Those who've bashed Mr. Perry, stop hating. You've done nothing but disappoint yourselves with your expectations. I'm all about positive black love myself. But HAHN is in the soap opera genre, people. Scandal is par for the course. And HAHN sure serves it!

The background music during many parts of the dialogue is way too loud and I can't hear the lines being performed! Wishing for better hearing of dialogue, Lou

    • Cherie USA #2131928

I totally agree with you! The music is WAY too loud! We have to constantly rewind the scenes in order to hear the dialogue. Don't mean to be a Debbie Downer or Negative Nelly but you know black folks gonna keep it real lol!! Love the show but Tyler turn the background music down a tad. Smooches :-)

  • jerri orlando

I think candices new man is a jim set up....cant wait to see.

    • Kori Arizona #2131088

I agree. I remember he being directed by Jeffrey's dad before Candace entered the parlor room. I just hope he turns to really love her because after he uttered the word love to her she flipped. She's damaged and its messed up if he's doing the same thing to her.

    • jerri #2131359

I was feeling he might actually fall for her ....love this show.

I Love this show and I think that the actors are the BEST I have ever seen. I have watched this show from the beginning. There are no better actors in the movies. I want to see Katherine and Jim make a new start. I am tired of David catering to Veronica and Jeffrey too. Sonething has to give here. I would also like to see Candice have a good boyfriend and treat her good so that she can go straight and behave. Too much about Jeffrey!! I miss Amanda. I liked her. Please run thew episodes longer. This is my favorite show.

It never ends the white boy always get the black female with the wave then you have the black gentleman who is playing g** has a crush on the white boy? Why is it that we continue to always run toward white people in relationships? Why is it that African-Americans can't have relationships or Robert take it to bed relationships with one another? Why is the white boy and white girl always the prize for African-American male or female to have in movies in motion pictures. No matter how many African-American male and female killed by whites you Tyler Perry along with your white counterparts want to make it seem that whites are the ultimate epiphany for African-Americans to be with. You are partly responsible in widening the gap of respect and relationships between African-American men and women. Your show is an interesting study for the Dynamics I have mention.

what world are u living in,,tyler is trying to keep it close to relaty as possible,,whites are not prizes,,,blacks kill theirown,,don't take care of their kids or women,,so going to another race I,m for it..

I agree totally Anonymous. It's Jeffrey after Wyatt, Candice's new man, & horse faced Maggie after David. I also hate that Tyler made Veronica so crazy. I think it's because she;s against the idea of her son being gay. She CANNOT be a sane, rational mother who believes wholeheartedly in the word of God that says men should not be intimate with men & women should not be intimate with women, she has to be crazy. I too wish Tyler would tone down the g** storyline, at least don't be so graphic. I used to watch Dynasty back in the day & Blake Carrington's son was gay. Viewers did not have to watch him swapping spit & laying up with another man, everything was implied & that scenario should be played with the heterosexual couples as well. I don't know how much longer I will be watching this show.

You bash everyone's comments. Girl bye!!

    • granny Mn #2137110

Why is race brought into everything?? White women shouldn't wear their hair like black women, but black women wear their hair like white women and nothings said. !!??? It is people like yourself that keeps the race card alive and kicking. Enough already! How silly. Give it a rest. Taking down the Confederate flag doesn't change history. The past is the past. Instead of playing the race card all the time, hold your head high and realize what a beautiful black woman/ handsome black man you are. I'm white and would love to be as beautiful as these black women. Your skin is so beautiful!! I look like I'm running around in long johns year ' round, I'm so white. LOL I'd love to have the fuller l*** that you have been blessed with. Have a Happy Day :)

I know most people hate Veronica, but I think she has trust issues that probably stem from her childhood & that is why she reacts so harshly to what she perceives to be betrayal. Whatever, I DO NOT want her husband to give in to horsefaced Maggie. That might cause me to stop watching.

    • lorraine #2130863

I think Veronica was g** when she was young, and her parents reacted to her the same way she's reacting to Jeffrey! That's why she keeps telling him to have sex with the opposite sex and keep doing it 'over and over' until he starts to like it; no doubt she did the same thing and ended up marrying David! Now she's on the prowl like a cougar, going after 'young flesh' (Benny)! She's as crazy as a betsy-bug and needs help!!! *I hope Oscar is not a Jim plant, b/c I think he does care for Candace! If he IS/WAS a Jim plant, I think getting to know Candace is quickly changing his mind! He sees she's not the monster Jim has made her out to be, and he wants to help her. I'm not necessarily into interracial relationships but I suppose it might work...

    • kori #2131089

yes I agree with you on Oscar. I do hope he sees Candace for who she is.. She just been hurt and lived a rough life. I like her a great deal
